FAQs - Stewarding and SIA Licence

The Private Security Industry Act 2001 established the Security Industry Authority (SIA) the body responsible for regulating the private security industry. The 2001 Act sets out what roles and activities are licensable and requires people carrying out these roles to hold an SIA licence. These roles include manned guarding, door supervisors and security guarding.

A licence exemption for stewards directly employed by a sports ground that has a safety certificate was granted under the Violent Crime Reduction Act 2006. This 2006 Act also set out that employees of a visiting team to a ground with a safety certificate, can supply staff to support the host ground. For example, if Club A is playing Club B at home, Club B can provide their employed stewards to Club A for the duration of that specific fixture (only).
